The Power of the Open Door
How one leadership move can begin to shift culture before you say a word.
Hi there! Great to chat with you again. 👋🏼
It’s not just a door. It’s a signal to your people.
I know how it feels.
You’re buried in a to-do list that should’ve been done yesterday.
The calendar is packed. The radio is crackling.
You’re finally in your office with a second to breathe…
And then someone knocks.
Or worse — doesn’t knock. They peek.
See the door closed.
Keep walking.
In that tiny moment, as message gets sent:
“Now’s not the time. My issue isn’t big enough. I’ll handle it myself — or not at all.”
And that’s the problem.
Your door isn’t just a door.
It’s a symbol of how you lead.
The Reality: People Don’t Need Perfection. They Need Presence.
We’ve all said it.
“My door is always open!”
But here’s the thing:
If that door is literally closed…
If people feel like they’re interrupting something sacred…
If you’re body language says “not now”…
Then the message isn’t welcome.
And in schools? That message ripples.
🪨 Teachers start handling things alone.
⛔️ Staff stop sharing ideas.
👀 Students stop trusting leadership.
The result?
You lead from behind a door no one’s walking through.
And culture suffers in silence.
What This Looks Like in Action
Opening your door isn’t just about logistics — it’s about leadership.
It’s how you say:
- “I’m available.”
- “You’re not a burden.”
- “You matter here.”
It doesn’t mean people flood in nonstop. (They won’t.)
It means they know they can.
And that changes everything.
🔥 A teacher drops by with a classroom win — because they trust you’ll celebrate it.
🔥 You overhear a challenge before it becomes a crisis.
🔥 A staff member asks for clarity — because they believe you’ll listen without judgement.
And you didn’t chase it.
You created space for it.
Leadership Moves You Can Make This Week
🚪 Make the Open Door Intentional, Not Accidental
Don’t just leave it cracked by chance. Start your day with purpose: door open, mindset open.
⏰ Set Boundaries Without Creating Walls
Need focus time? Cool. Post your “deep work hour” on the door. Then reopen it. Communicate availability with clarity, not ambiguity.
👋🏼 Create Doorway Moments
You don’t need to run a staff meeting to lead. A hallway high-five or a 90-second chat in your office threshold builds connection daily.
🔎 Notice Who Stops Dropping In
If someone who used to show up doesn’t anymore — check in. That door might’ve sent a message you didn’t mean to send.
💪🏼 Reinforce It With Your Leadership Team
What doors are your APs, deans, and coaches keeping closed — physically and figuratively? This work isn’t just about you. It’s about your whole culture.
Final Thought: Culture Doesn’t Wait for the Big Moves. It Grows in the Small Ones.
You don’t need a new initiative to shift your culture.
You don’t need a motivational speaker.
You need an open door.
An open mind.
And the willingness to be present when it could be easier to hide.
Because leadership isn’t about always having the right answer.
It’s about being the person people believe they can go to —
and the door they know won’t shut them out.
