Redefining Public Education: The NeoCity Academy Story
This week, I am thrilled to share some exciting news: NeoCity Academy, the school I had the honor of founding, has been nationally recognized as a 2024 Blue Ribbon School for Excellence. This award, a pinnacle of educational achievement, celebrates schools that model exemplary performance and serve as inspiring case studies for elevating education nationwide.
NeoCity’s story began with a mission to redefine what public education can be. The school’s design - rooted in problem-based learning, STEM-focused projects, and a commitment to real-world applications - represents an intentional departure from traditional lecture-based instruction. The idea is simple: engage students by making learning meaningful. Research consistently supports this approach, showing that “authentic learning experiences lead to greater student engagement, retention, and academic performance” (Bell, Smetana, & Binns, 2005). At NeoCity, students aren’t just working for grades; they’re deeply engaged in solving problems that matter to them, developing skills they’ll use throughout their lives.
The Genesis of NeoCity Academy
A core pillar of NeoCity’s philosophy is purpose. This approach counters the “busy work” culture still prevalent in too many schools - something I’ve seen firsthand throughout my career. A recent article in Educational Leadership reinforces this shift, noting that “students are more motivated and learn better when the work they’re doing feels relevant to their lives now, not just as preparation for a distant future” (Dweck, 2017). At NeoCity, relevance is central: whether in science labs or collaborative design projects, students tackle real-world challenges, sparking the kind of intellectual curiosity and intrinsic motivation that lasts far beyond the classroom.
When you visit NeoCity, you’ll see students empowered to ask questions, think critically, and take ownership of their learning. This resonates with findings from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, which underscores that “autonomy-supportive classrooms lead to a positive cycle of motivation, engagement, and performance” (Reeve, 2012). NeoCity students are learning not just to absorb information but to think independently - a vital skill in today’s rapidly evolving world.
Implementing Project-Based Learning in Public Schools
The impact of NeoCity’s approach has not gone unnoticed. During a recent visit, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona praised NeoCity Academy as an exemplar for the future of public education. “NeoCity is getting it right,” he said. “Across the country, I’ve visited 47 states, different territories, a bunch of other countries … I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a program like the one I’ve seen here. This is what’s right about public education.” His words underscore the value of rethinking traditional models and show how NeoCity has become a beacon for what’s possible in education.

Achievements and Recognitions
While I’m proud of the Blue Ribbon recognition, this award is more than a symbol of academic excellence. It speaks to the broader movement NeoCity is inspiring - one that challenges educators to design systems that support meaningful, engaging, and relevant learning experiences. An article in Education Week emphasizes this shift, reporting that “schools focused on project-based learning have seen marked improvements in student engagement, reduced dropout rates, and increased college readiness” (Lieber, 2020). NeoCity’s journey has provided valuable insights into what modern schooling can look like, serving as a model for districts across the nation.
The Around Osceola article covering our award captured this well, noting that NeoCity’s students are motivated by learning “with a purpose.” This purpose-driven culture is one that others are eager to emulate, as evidenced by the growing number of visitors to the campus - from district leaders to policymakers - seeking inspiration and insight into our model.
Looking Ahead
NeoCity Academy represents what’s possible when educators are empowered to innovate. This achievement results from hard work and a shared vision across our community. To all of you leading your own schools and districts, the message is this: let’s keep pushing the boundaries. Whether through problem-based learning, teacher-led innovations, or community partnerships, we have the power to shape the future of education together.
Let’s remember Secretary Cardona’s words and continue to demonstrate “what’s right about public education.” With creativity, commitment, and a focus on relevance, we can inspire the next generation of learners and leaders.
